Is It the Turkey?

Is it the turkey or is it the historical value of the day that makes me love Thanksgiving? I've always marveled at the story of pilgrims and Indians getting together to celebrate togetherness, each bringing what he or she could to the festive table and sharing with new friends. Now, whether that wholesome scenario actually took place in just that way, I don't know; but what I do know is even now many years later Thanksgiving has a special aura to it. A sense of peace, gratitude, warmth and still, a little mystery.

It also could be the turkey and all the scrumptuous trimmings that make the day so special. I don't remember a Thanksgiving without turkey. Even when I had to stay in a dorm over the holiday, the cafeteria served turkey. My favorite part is the skin. Now, I know that grosses many out but really the taste of that browned, crispy skin is to live for. My mother used to like the tail; again, another gross thought for some, but even now that she's been gone close to seven years, I eat the tail in her honor.

Anyway, whether it's munching on turkey, cranberries, yams and pumpkin pie or musing on the fact that people long ago gathered together to give thanks, it makes for a grand day. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
